position overview

The Communications Manager is part of a dynamic team, and is responsible for growing the public profile of the Foundation. Initially, the Communications Manager will work under the direction of the President & CEO to develop, implement, and execute a communications strategy to grow awareness of ECF’s impact in Evanston. 

This position should be prepared to serve as a spokesperson for the Foundation to the media, community members, donors and organizational allies in the absence of the President & CEO.

ECF’s Communications Manager is resourceful, self-motivated, technologically savvy, community-minded, and pays keen attention to detail. They are a good listener, collaborator, communicator and relationship builder, excellent writer and storyteller, and a multi-tasker. Proficiency in Spanish is preferred.

The Communications Manager leads ECF’s community and media outreach, marketing, online communications, and public relations in alignment with our strategic plan. Working under the direction of and in partnership with the President & CEO, this position includes strategy development; planning, writing and editing on deadline; media and social media outreach and story placement; development and oversight of the Foundation’s website and social media networks; speechwriting for Foundation events; facilitating the production of Foundation marketing materials and videos; and general communications.

qualifications, characteristics and skills

  • Highly developed speaking and writing skills
  • Fluent in basic Microsoft Office applications – Word, Outlook, and Excel
  • Proficient with communication tools (SLACK, Canva, Survey Monkey, Mail Chimp)
  • Ability to analyze, think critically, and explain alternatives clearly
  • Organized, detail- and process-oriented
  • Demonstrated commitment to ongoing anti-racist and/or Diversity, Equity and Inclusion learning
  • Able to work autonomously and as part of a team
  • Preference for bilingual candidates: English and Spanish, preferred
  • Enthusiastic about, and high level of commitment to, the Evanston community
  • Exhibits cultural humility, and is approachable and relatable to community members
  • Exceptional personal integrity and discretion; scrupulous respect for confidentiality
  • Flexible to work some evenings and weekends
